Ringside Update/ Gervonta Davis Mayweather’s New ‘Money’

*As I begin this edition about this young boxing sensation who hails out of Baltimore, Maryland, I can’t help but to think of whom this fighter reminds me so much of.

There are so many to chose from but who really stands out to me is “Iron” Mike Tyson. And folks, the reason why is because Gervonta Davis is short, and compact with power, and speed. And anybody that could knock you out with a body shot, is very dangerous indeed.

He’s had over 200 amateur fights before turning professional, so he had enough experience before he got into the big stage. And since turning pro he has accumulated a very impressive ring record of 21-0 with 20 coming by way of knockout. And he’s only 24 years old.

He’s a two time super featherweight champion now currently holding the WBA title and if any of you missed his fight last weekend that was telecast live on Showtime Championship Boxing you really missed something special because he stopped Hugo Ruiz at 2:59 in the first round by TKO.

It hasn’t been an easy upbringing for this young man after going in and out of foster homes and dealing with the rough and gritty life of the streets Sand-Town Winchester section of Baltimore, Maryland, he was able to find an escape from all of what he was going through by being in the boxing gym. His trainer and mentor is none other than Calvin Ford who has given him the right leadership and mentoring that he continues to provide.

He is now one of Floyd “Money” Mayweather’s top tier fighters or what this writer considers new “Money” and he is set to go farther in the boxing stratosphere under Mayweather Promotions.

There’s whispers around the sport that he ‘s ready to take on Vasyl Lamachenko and or even Mikey Garcia two of the other world champion fighters in that weight division. As I always say, we’ll see what happens. In the meantime, keep your eyes on this kid because he’s dangerous folks.

In other boxing news, Anthony Joshua is set to go against “Big baby” Miller in a championship bout that will be held at Madison Square Garden on June 1 with his WBA, IBF, WBO, and IBO titles all on the line and we’re all looking forward to seeing that one go down.
