Don’t Be a Bystander: Five Steps to Fight Cyberbullying

*Bullying has never, in the history of mankind, been so inventive. Over the past decade or so, the act of bullying has become more sophisticated, wide-ranging, destructive, and difficult to control. Cyberbullies can now be seen everywhere spreading social media propaganda and exploiting the digital age to spread the hate.

Even though bullies seem unstoppable and their targets are usually defenseless people, there are various techniques to deal with them.

The Social Media Propaganda Model

Stage 1: What Is My Position?

In this stage, we need to ask ourselves what our position is with respect to the scenario and why? This is how we can recognize and determine our beliefs. As a result, we will be able to understand the origins of our feelings before we can react.

Stage 2: How Do I Explain My Reactions?

In this stage, you need to analyze whatever reasons you determined in the previous step. By doing so, we understand our passive bystander behavior and how we feel about standing by while people spread hate online.

Stage 3: What Do I Want To Do?

Once we’ve really understood our stance and feelings, we can move on to the planning stage. This is where we can design our counter social media propaganda based on our social media specialties. Here, we should also set goals for the outcomes of our anti cyberbullying campaign such aswho will we be targeting and what skills should we employ in our actions and why.

Stage 4: What Is Holding Me Back from Taking Action?

After you’ve detailed your strategies, you should really think about the catalysts and inhibitors of your campaign. By recalling these factors, you will be able to relive your feelings and also side step whatever is making you procrastinate. This is where you should be able to determine – ‘Do I care enough to act?’

Stage 5: Act

Now that we have recognized our feelings and the reason to react, we need to stop being passive bystanders. With our clear action plan, we can address the factor(s) that have been holding us back all this while and implement our anti-bullying campaign.

With this 5-step social media propaganda model, we can help the black community, LGBTQ+, indigenous groups, and refugees. They are the ones who are increasingly victimized on social media. Now that you are changing your stance against cyberbullying, you are an agent for change.

Help us make a difference and stop bullying people.
