How to Protect Packages From Porch Pirates

*Ever heard of the term “porch pirates”? They’re crooks who steal your delivered packages from your front door. As Shorr.com notes, one in three Americans has had a package stolen off the front porch.

Fortunately, you do not have to take this porch pirate nonsense lying down. The following tips offer tangible ways that you can set up your front door/patio area to deter thieves from gaining access and walking away with the packages that were left by your postal or package carrier.

Install a Security Camera System

Crooks who hunt for packages to steal may look for signs that they should leave certain homes alone. If you have a visible security camera system installed by your front door as well as signs alerting the nogoodniks that you are monitoring their every shady move, this is a great place to start. For example, the 4K Ultra HD Resolution 8MP Outdoor IP Camera from Lorex is a terrific option; as a bonus, it features night vision, which means if those porch pirates decide to strike at night under the cover of darkness, the camera will be able to record footage of the thieves in full color. Their Nocturnal security cameras feature infrared LED lights that the naked eye can’t see but the camera can. If you add external lights around the camera, you can take advantage of the Color Night Vision technology that can capture video in color up to 225 feet away.

Invest in a Package Guard

This Frisbee-sized Package Guard device not only sends you notifications when a package is delivered at your doorstep, it features a loud alarm that will sound off if the package is taken by anyone who is not authorized to do so. It will also alert you and a select group of friends and neighbors that the package has been taken. You can attach the Package Guard to your porch, and the battery-operated unit will run for about six to nine months before you have to change the batteries. To remove your package without having the alarm go off, you simply need to let the Package Guard app know.

Purchase a Package Box

Porch pirates tend to be lazy — if they can see a box clearly from the road, they may run up and grab it. If they don’t spot anything, they will probably cruise past your house. To help hide anything that is dropped off, consider buying a Parcel Delivery Box. The big box store sells a large plastic 18 inch by 31 inch white ground mount mailbox that looks really nice, has an easy-open lid and can easily blend into the décor on your front porch. So it doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb, consider adding maybe a planter or two to your front doorway, and when ordering from a company, make a note in the delivery details to leave the package in the delivery box.

Banish Porch Pirates for Good

Having a box stolen from your porch or front door can make you feel extremely violated. It doesn’t matter if they made off with a $2 trinket or $500 worth of electronics, theft is theft and you should do all you can to deter it from happening. By giving the aforementioned tips a try and maybe coming up with a few of your own, you can rest assured that you are doing everything in your power to keep your home and deliveries as safe as possible.
