‘Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse’ Co-Director Peter Ramsey Breaks Records with $100M Box Office

*Filmmaker Peter Ramsey became the fifth Black director in 2018 to have a film gross $100M at the domestic box office.

With an estimated $18.3M this weekend, “Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse,” directed by Ramsey, Bob Persichetti and Rodney Rothman, has surpassed $103 million and is Peter’s second film to gross the century mark, blackfilm.com reports. His 2012 directorial debut, “Rise of the Guardians,” grossed $103M domestically and $306.9M worldwide. With ‘Guardians,’ he was the first Black director to helm a big budget animated feature.

Globally, ‘Spider-Verse’ has bagged nearly $170M so far.

As previously reported, Black filmmakers had a remarkable year at the box office in 2018 — earning a record $1.5 billion at the domestic box office from 16 films, per TheWrap.

“What we’re seeing is a combination of a number of things. We’ve seen, in the last four or five years, a renaissance of black voices and a rise of black filmmakers,” Macro founder and CEO Charles D. King said. “And you’ve got studios and financiers paying more attention to an audience that’s been historically underserved.”

“It shows that Hollywood gets at least passing marks for allowing — or for supporting, rather, black filmmakers,” Gil Robertson, founder of the African American Film Critics Association, said.
