Tipping While Black: Dismantling Popular Stereotypes in the U.S. and Abroad – VIDEO

*If you’re a white individual and are reading this post, we would like to thank you for tying to understand the struggles and plight faced by our black community. With these collective truths, you may not be able to change your lives, but will definitely be able to gain some perspective.

In our community, there seems to be a need to inconvenience ourselves to over-tip – simply to prove a point about us as a group. We do so because of we love to look out for our own. We want the next person that avails the service to have a great experienced based on the very positive impression we left for them.

This is because there are many of us who believe that our everyday interactions and individual experiences either lower or raise the bar for our collective experience in the black population. Imagine the burden and weight our perception has to live with everyday! And still, here we are. Here I am.

Whether we will admit it to others or keep silent, our brains tend to compartmentalize our natural opinions based on our up-front experiences and second-hand experiences from peers. So in countries where there are smaller black populations, it will be common for people in our communities to defend each other against ignorant beliefs and archaic stereotypes.

tip - black people don't tip

Homogeneity isn’t the problem here. This is due to the lack of diversified roles being displayed by the media or the new coverages. More than anything else, these tend to paint black people with the all too familiar broad strokes. This is why we would say that if you’ve never thought about how you tip, you can go ahead and think about how your actions reflect your race. This is the very definition of privilege.

Privilege is a word that has many meanings. It isn’t necessarily something people should feel guilty about. On the contrary, it is something that you should acknowledge in order to better understand the individuals around you. This is how empathy and compassion is born.

For all the white people who are reading this, the only way this message can change your lives is if you amplify our voice. The people, who really need to hear this message, wouldn’t want to hear it from us. And for us, we’re simply going to continue over-tipping.
