Patti LaBelle Giving Ariana Grande Props Reminds Folks She’s a Brown-Faced White Culture Vulture

;

*Yep, there’s no doubt that Ariana Grande is a hot little number. We mean that literally. Yes, she’s short in stature and she’s real easy to look at. But most of all, she’s hot as fire on the music charts doing this generation’s version of R&B. And that’s a problem with some folks who feel the singer, who is white (and not even Latina), is appropriating black music and culture. In other words, she’s a culture vulture!

That doesn’t seem to bother 74-year-old Patti LaBelle of all people. LaBelle is known as one of the most soulful singers ever. So  when Patti told Grande, 25, that she was “and a bag of chips,” a lot of people took notice and lot people aren’t quite comfortable with those words coming out of LaBelle’s mouth.

LaBelle made the comments recently as she was asked to introduce Grande at this year’s “Woman of the Year” at Billboard’s Women in Music Awards. Grande earned the award after a year of personal traumas and career victories.

When they were on stage together, LaBelle recounted a story when she previously told Grande to “sing like the little white black girl” she is. LaBelle then added, “Grande has soul like a mug.”

Even though LaBelle’s comment was intended as a compliment, a lot of folks, via social media, are of the opinion that Miss Grande is appropriating not only black/African American culture, but Latino as well.

Writing in Relevist, Emerald Pellot, reminds that “Ariana Grande is often accused of playing into racial ambiguity, wearing brown face, and appropriating African American vernacular.” Bottom line: LaBelle’s comment gives Grande, a white woman, permission to be a culture vulture just because she has a great voice.

The video below wraps things up and puts it all in perspective. It shows Grande’s previous Valley Girl accent and very apparent whiteness that is then compared to her more recently evolved “blaccent” and brown skin.
