‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ Premiere – WATCH EUR’s Exclusive Coverage!

*Saturday (12-01-18) marked the premiere of “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.” This Sony Pictures premiere was special for two reasons: one being the first Afro-Latino Spider-Man and the first release since Stan Lee’s passing on November 12 at age 95.

The latest Spider-Man adaptation, this particular one being animated tells the story of one Spider-Man teaming up with Spider-Men and Spider-Women in other dimensions to fight crime. The story focuses on Miles Morales, a Afro-Latino, Brooklyn teen bitten by a radioactive spider and hit with spidey-senses.

Luna Lauren Velez (Morales’s Mother- Rio Morales), Brian Tyree Henry (Jefferson Davis) and Shameik Moore (Miles Morales) all talk about how important this moment is for minorities. Spider-Man being created in 1962 has been of Caucasian decent since the beginning, now adding diversity gives all kids and adults a chance to see themselves in the superhero Marvel Universe. Not to mention it’s also the first of its kind to showing diverse female superheroes such as Kimiko Glen (Peni Parker).

Without giving away too much, the filmmakers discussed the scene, which presents an animated version of Lee as a Big Apple merchant whose store is visited by Miles at a time when the youngster is contemplating his destiny and duty. Lee’s character offers some straight-forward words of wisdom to Morales.

The timing of the release has added deep sadness to the scene but Bob Perischetti makes a great point by saying “It was important to us that his character was important to the plot, and we achieved that, his character has a key moment and gives Miles a talisman.”

Lee has been a Marvel model by appearing in more than three dozen films over the past two decades, including all five of Sony’s live-action Spider-Man films. Although the roles are always small but the films themselves have been major hits at the box offices. As this one will be too, already receiving beyond impeccable reviews.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse starring Mahershala Ali, Nicolas Cage, Hailee Steinfeld, Liev Schreiber, Jake Johnson, Lily Tomlin, Brian Tyree Henry, Kimiko Glenn and Shameik Moore hits theaters December 14.
