New Poll Reveals Most Americans Want Idris Elba as the Next James Bond

*According to a new poll, most Americans support a black 007… specifically, Idris Elba as James Bond.

As reported by Yahoo.com, a new poll which surveyed 2,201 adults this November 8–11, led by “The Hollywood Reporter,” has found that 52 percent of people support the casting of a black Bond, and 63 percent supported the idea of Elba taking over the role as Daniel Craig’s final James Bond film, the 25th installment, approaches.

But when asked this past August if he was ready to suit up as Bond, the British hunk said, “No.”

Back in January when the Bond question came up he told Variety, “Are we interested in having a Bond character other than being a male? Could be a woman, could be a black woman, could be a white woman, but I think that character, everybody would like to see it have—do something different with it, why not?”

That same month, Idris also shot down the idea to The New York Times, saying, “It’s interesting that the James Bond thing continues to go. I think it’s more about, we just want to have a black guy play James Bond rather than Idris Elba the actor play James Bond. That’s the part that I’m like, ‘Ugh, come on.’”

Meanwhile, according to the report, only 39 percent of people polled support a Hispanic Bond,37 percent want to see an Asian Bond, and only 28 percent were in favor of a gay James Bond.

In related news, yet another production of “Cats” is due to begin in December… a film to be exact, and starring Mr. Elba, Taylor Swift, Judi Dench, Ian McKellen, Jennifer Hudson, James Corden, Jason Derulo and Francesca Hayward, Variety reports.

Hudson is playing Grizabella, Elba is portraying Macavity, and McKellen is Gus the Theatre Cat.

Tom Hooper will direct from a script he co-wrote with Lee Hall. The famed musical was based on “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats” by T.S. Eliot.
