DeWayne Johnson: Former Groundskeeper Accepts Reduced $78M Monsanto Verdict

*Back in August 2018, jurors in California ruled that popular weed killer Roundup was responsible for the terminal cancer of former groundskeeper, DeWayne Johnson.

Johnson was awarded $289 million in damages for Monsanto’s failure to warn consumers that Roundup contains elements that might cause cancer. His doctor even testified that the 46-year-old has less than three years to live.

Jurors found that Monsanto acted with “malice” and that its weed killers Roundup and the professional grade version RangerPro contributed “substantially” to Johnson’s terminal illness.

Monsanto Vice President, Scott Partridge, said of the verdict at the time: “Today’s decision does not change the fact that more than 800 scientific studies and reviews—and conclusions by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the U.S. National Institutes of Health and regulatory authorities around the world—support the fact that glyphosate does not cause cancer, and did not cause Mr. Johnson’s cancer.”

Monsanto vowed to appeal the decision.

On Wednesday, Johnson accepted a judge’s reduced verdict of $78 million, and while his attorney disagrees with the settlement reduction, his spokeswoman Robin McCall says Johnson accepted the lower amount in hopes of achieving “a final resolution within his lifetime.”

Monsanto is facing 8,000 similar lawsuits across the country.
