Ava DuVernay Granted Access to Prince’s Archives for Netflix Documentary

*Producer/director Ava DuVernay has received the blessing of Prince’s estate to make a documentary about the late singer for Netflix.

According to Variety, the multiple-part documentary will cover the artist’s life and career and the estate will provide interviews, archival footage, photos and archive access.

“Prince was a genius and a joy and a jolt to the senses,” Ava tweeted Monday night. “He was like no other. He shattered preconceived notions, smashed boundaries, and shared his heart through his music.”

The Oscar-nominated filmmaker has been at work on the project for several months.

“The only way I know how to make this film is with love and great care. I’m honored to do so and grateful,” she said.

Deadline also notes that Prince reached out directly to the “Queen Sugar” creator about working together before his 2016 death.

The Prince documentary is one of several projects DuVernay is working on. For months, she’s been in production on the Netflix drama, “Central Park Five.” The limited series centers on the five Harlem teens who were wrongly convicted twice for the 1989 rape of a jogger in Central Park. The drama will premiere in 2019.

Meanwhile, a source told Variety that a documentary about Prince and the Revolution’s historic concert at Minneapolis’ First Avenue in August of 1983 has landed at Apple Music.
