*LeBron James has been at the top of his game in the world of NBA for 15 years and more, becoming one of the most decorated basketball players of all time. Not only is Jay-Z one of the most acclaimed rappers of all time, he just so happens to be a successful entrepreneur too. What helps LeBron, Jay-Z and so many other urban icons to continually flourish?

A leading cognitive neuroscientist and psychologist, Mr Ian Robertson, believes those who thrive in competitive environments such as professional sport and the music industry benefit from the ‘Winner Effect’. Mr Robertson, who also teaches as a professor at Trinity College Dublin, has proof that our brains are hardwired to find more positive outcomes based on past successes.

Robertson says that winners in all industries and environments attribute success to a positive emotion. Individuals, like LeBron and Jay-Z, who get a taste for success will develop the ‘Winner Effect’ which is based around four key processes in the brain, designed to help individuals outsmart the competition:

  • Our bodies experience a 33% rise in testosterone levels, fuelling confidence and aggression in the heat of competition.
  • We assess the risk-versus-reward ratio to determine how intense we react to the competition.
  • Our brain’s reward network is hard-wired to continually seek positive (successful) experiences.
  • Dopamine teams up with the brain to help individuals replicate the same behaviours that achieved past successes.

Robertson’s fascinating theory on the Winner Effect has inspired Betway to delve deeper into how our brains react during competitive journeys.

As you can see below, it can’t be overstated just how important winning can be for our brains, our bodies and our lives in general.
