Katt Williams Holds Record for Most Filmed and Distributed Comedy Specials

*Katt Williams recently shared his thoughts about the most celebrated comics today and how they bag deals with streaming services. He also provided insight into his money management process.

Williams joined V-103’s ‘Frank and Wanda’ last Friday and popped off on a bunch of comedians, including Tiffany Haddish. During that same interview, he also roasted host Wanda Smith … mocking her weight, wig and cooking skills.

His comments sparked outrage and conversations online about skin tone, female comedians and how he manages to consistently stay on 100-city tours.

The interview between Williams and the morning shows hosts, which can be viewed and heard on YouTube courtesy of V103 radio Atlanta, has been viewed more than two million times. In case you missed it, watch the clip above.

Forbes.com also broke down the “5 Things” learned “About Katt Williams’ Since His Scorching V103 Interview.”

1. Williams says he owns his own content, and that might be key to repurposing it or selling it to other networks or streaming services later on down the line. Said Williams: “I have the top two comedy specials on Showtime, HBO and Comedy Central. They don’t promote it or sell the items after they come out because I own them lock, stock and barrel.”

2. Williams and Aretha Franklin apparently come from the same school of money; much like how she demanded upfront payment for performance, he apparently pays for things in cash. If Williams is able to get by without loans, he is a smart cookie indeed. Either he lives way beneath his means or he is banking enough cash to pay outright for whatever he wants. In a world where credit seems to rule, this is remarkable. “I’m 50, and I’ve never had a bank loan or a car lease in my life.”

3. Williams knows how to make a radio interview go viral. After talking with morning show hosts Frank Ski and Wanda Smith of Atlanta’s V103 FM, video of the interview – in which he lambasted Haddish’s skills – got extremely popular. In parts of the interview, he questioned whether Haddish and others had the ability to go on a 100-city tour and pack a house night after night for hours of standup. He also noted that Haddish didn’t write 2017’s surprise (to some) blockbuster Girls Trip, insinuating that the credit for her success should go to the writers. Williams is a masterful comedian, so arguably some of what he said early interview could be taken with a grain of salt. However, later comments came off as very, very serious. Williams mentioned a number of comedians, including Lil Rel, Jerrod Carmichael and Kevin Hart, and added this: “The fact of the matter is, what makes a great comedy special is, if 100 people talk at the same time that you talking, are you saying something different from what [they] are saying? Because if you are, you deserve a special.”

4. Williams’ The Pimp Chronicles standup, which was filmed in Atlanta, has grossed over $24 million. It can currently be found on Netflix and on Amazon Prime Video in addition to being sold outright for physical, in-home DVD ownership. This shows the power of a well-done comedy special.

5. Williams holds the record for most filmed and distributed comedy specials. “That only speaks to quantity,” says Williams. “I do have more comedy specials than any comedian breathing or dead. That’s only seven more than Richard Pryor. And six more than Martin Lawrence and six more than Chris Rock. Five more than Dave Chappelle. Those are just facts, sir.”
