The Most Damaging Myth about Slavery, Debunked – VIDEO

*Have you ever thought that American slaves were perhaps responsible for their own misery? When Kanye West commented that slavery was a choice on TMZ, similar questions began to resurface. What people don’t know is that Kanye clarified that the centuries of slavery has gotten African Americans mentally enslaved, and that is our choice.

This is a small example of how misinterpreted the topic of slavery has become. People easily forget that the reason behind centuries of slavery was a system of sustained brutality in terms of politics, society and economic ability. They even choose to ignore the plethora of examples of rebellion, resistance, and escape. What’s more? They have also disregarded the legacies of over incarceration, oppressive laws and violent acts of terrorism that kept people in color under their control.

But couldn’t they have resisted? Well, they did. Many mutinies and rebellions had occurred in slave ships that journeyed to the New World. These included countless failed attempts and even suicides by people who thought death was better than a complete loss of liberty.

There are some famous accounts like one of Nat Turner and other less known ones like that of Denmark Vesey. The latter corralled hundreds of slaves around South Carolina and led insurrections that had the motive of killing and burning white slave owners. However, the latter never came to fruition as an informant had tipped off the authorities and the plot was brought down at the last minute. Many were convicted and at least 30 of the most prominent organizers were executed.

The idea of a ‘chosen’ bondage even ignores the fact that thousands of slaves took to the riskiest escapes ever. The terrifying but sophisticated network called the Underground Railroad was one of these. Some of these slaves who tried to escape were even made into public shows of tortures, burnings, dismemberments, and quite simply – murder.

Historians like Howard Zinn found that these attempts were mostly met with slowdowns, sabotages and resistance. Nevertheless, these attempts for freedom were nothing less than pure courage and assertions to gain the dignity of human beings with their brothers and sisters.

This dignity should not be misinterpreted or belittled by anyone as slaves tried their best to exercise every glimmer of free will. So do you still think they gave into their bondage? Do you still think that slavery was a choice?
