*The City of Hope Gala is an annual charity event that raises money for cancer research. Each year they honor an individual in the music and entertainment space that has made an impact in those areas. This year the recipient of the Spirit of Life award was the chairman and CEO of Warner/Chappell Music, Jon Platt.
The Gala was held in Santa Monica, Ca. and featured a guest list of industry heavy weights, including Mr. and Mrs. Carter, that’s Jay Z and Beyonce. With Pharell Williams taking on hosting duties for the night.
EURweb’s Jill Munroe hit the gray carpet to get some insight into “Big Jon” from his family and some of the entertainment titans whose lives he’s touched.
Super producer Timbaland shared that Platt was instrumental in the start of his career. He took a same day flight to ensure that he was personally in attendance to see Platt honored.
Producer, song writer and executive Jermaine Durpri – who also served as the DJ for the afterparty – spoke about how he Platt spent time together early in their careers, connecting, bonding and pushing each other towards greatness.
Tina and Mary Campbell of the gospel group Mary Mary, shared that Jon gave them their first publishing deal before they had a record deal. He encouraged them to write and became a good friend in the process.
In Jay Z’s introduction of Jon, he called him the “Obama of Music.” Beyonce has been working with Platt since 2005, she performed three songs for the event including “Halo” and “Ava Marie.”
Other A-List attendees included Dr. Dre, Kelly Rowland, Wiz Khalifa, Rita Ora, Usher, Tiffany Haddish and Quincy Jones.
The after party included cocktails by D’Ussé, chocolate chip cookies, sliders and fresh made pizza from Jon & Vinny’s, who also catered the dinner.
