*It’s time now folks for you to wake up out your deep sleep and pay special attention to this quiet storm of a young 19 year old boxing sensation named Devin Haney. This kid really has the goods and the whole ball of wax to be world champion. He’s bright, intelligent, articulate, and very skillful in the ring as he has been raised by his father William Haney who continues to guide him down the yellow brick road of success.

He’s been fighting since the age of 7 under his father’s leadership in the amateurs  where he eventually became seven time champion accumulating a record of 130-8  Having been raised in Oakland Calif., his father migrated to Las Vegas to seek a better life for him when he turned 8 and eventually established the Hit Factory Boxing Gym.

While Devin was fighting in the amateurs his father was continuing to provide home schooling and kept him polished in the gym where he was surrounded daily by the likes of former world champs  Zab Judah, Hasim Rahman, Eddie Mustafa Muhammad, and  many more. He trains quite a bit at Floyd Mayweather Jr’s Mayweather Boxing Club and has gained a lot of boxing skill and technique from the champ.

When he became 16 William Haney decided that he was ready to become professional and every since then he has been undefeated with 20 wins and no losses. In his most recent outing  last Friday night out at the Pechanga Indian Resort near San Diego, Calif.,  he fought against a game and well experienced Juan Carlos Burgos whom everyone thought would be a litmus test for him. He was the main event on the latest telecast of Sho Box The New Generation. And after giving him a superb boxing lesson throughout the bout, all three judges awarded him a unanimous decision thus giving him his 20th win as a pro.

This  young boxing sensation has the goods folks, and is the “real deal” and he’s only 19 years of age. He is definitely someone to look out for. If he goes on for the next ten years and stays healthy and undefeated, as we used to say, “the sky’s the limit” for this bright young talent.

Finally folks, it’s with great sadness that boxing has lost a real giant in the sport. Promoter Don Chargin  has left us at the age of 90. He was a long time promoter of the sport for some 60 years or more here in Los Angeles and throughout Southern Calif. The old Olympic Auditorium near downtown L.A. was one of the main locations beginning back in the early 50’s and throughout the 70’s  where  you could go and watch those infamous bouts featuring the likes of “Sugar” Ramos, “Indian Red” Lopez, “Dub” Hundley, and Cassius Green, ( just to name a few) in some of the most memorable bouts televised locally.

He was an indeed a gentleman and a scholar, may Allah give him peace in paradise.
