*Here’s something we bet you probably didn’t know. Besides Martin Luther King Jr., George Washington is the only other American to have had his birthday observed as a national holiday.
As far as King is concerned, it was in 1983 that President Ronald Reagan signed a bill creating a federal holiday to honor King. The holiday, first commemorated in 1986, is celebrated on the third Monday in January, close to the civil rights leader’s January 15 birthday.
It’s worth noting that today, January 15, is also a Monday. So this King Holiday, everything is aligned.
