Cedric The Entertainer Brings Out the Fun Side of Gentrification in CBS’ ‘The Neighborhood’ – VIDEO

*CBS has a bunch of exciting new shows dropping this fall that feature some of your favorite TV icons.

During the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour, EURweb’s Jill Munroe got a sneak peek at some of the upcoming shows on CBS’ fall programming slate.

One of those new shows,The Neighborhood is a comedy starring black TV royalty Cedric the Entertainer and Tichina Arnold as Calvin and Tina Butler. The Butlers live in a predominately black neighborhood where the beginnings of gentrification are creeping in. The first sign of impending doom being the overly friendly new white neighbors, The Johnsons.

Created by Jim Reynolds “The Neighborhood is loosely based on his own experiences after moving to a new neighborhood in L.A. recently. The show will tackle timely social issues and hopes to fill in the gasps surrounding conversations around race, but won’t be “preachy” or overly topical.

Reynolds – who is white – said he is aware that people will draw their own conclusions based on their own experiences, which could include viewers who believe reverse racism is a thing and use Cedric’s character as proof that “black people can be racists too.”

As an executive producer in addition to being one of the stars of the show, Cedric said it was important that a black man’s point of view be shown.

“Early on, when I started to get involved, I thought the thing that was missing was the actual point of view of the black guy.

You had the point of view of how it felt moving into a black neighborhood, but you don’t really have that true counter side. … If you get that point of view, you start to get more into the human side, the relationship side of what it takes to live in harmony with someone next door to you, white, black or otherwise. That’s when we started to figure out we actually have a show we can have fun with.”

The Neighborhood premieres Monday, Oct. 1 at 8/7c on CBS.
