*Recently Baltimore prodigy award winning actor and filmmaker Anthony Michael Hobbs (Disney’s “How to Train Your Dragon..”) was interviewed along with his mother Author Dr. Kerri Moseley Hobbs by Radio Talk Show Host Lou Fields of Radio One’s WOLB “Power Black Talk Shows.” The interview was about Anthony’s role as a young Frederick Douglass in the Emmy Award nominated PBS mini-series “The Abolitionist” in recognition of the 180th Frederick Douglass: Escape to Freedom Tours and Lectures presented by Lou Fields.

When asked about how he got the role he played as Frederick Douglass at six years-old, a scene that sparked the passion that was in Frederick Douglass to secure justice for African-Americans, his mother Dr. Hobbs replied, “They actually wanted him to audition for a young slave on the auction block, but after the audition they gave him Frederick Douglass so that was a great opportunity for him and he really enjoyed it.”

Scene from the Emmy Award nominated PBS mini-series of Anthony Michael Hobbs at 5 years-old playing Frederick Douglass as a slave at 6.

Dr. Hobbs was then questioned about her recently published book, “More Than a Fraction,” about her enslaved ancestors’ “escape to freedom.”

“My book is about my ancestors. It’s creative non-fiction to put their story with a story,” she said. “I specialize in 18th and 19th Century history. I work with two museums improving the history of the enslaved by making them people…You start in whatever African country they come from. I give a presentation…I like to take that information and link it to today.”

After talking about his Historical Tour experiences like his Harriet Tubman Tour in New York and his Frederick Douglass Tout where he said Douglass built five houses that are still standing, Host Lou Fields asked Anthony Michael Hobbs – after doing the role what stood out about Frederick Douglass – and he said, “That even as a young boy he was going through so much…he was cold and hot in the summer and experiencing so much…witnessing a lot…people getting whipped and himself.”

Fields asked him how it feels to be 13 years-old and have such an array of acting  and filmmaking credits that also include Sprout Network and Comcast Xfinity Network segments, a Disney project and three award winning films that he wrote, produced and directed himself, Anthony said, “Honestly it’s like I’m where I belong, where I am meant to be. I’m an only child and I would run around the living room acting out the characters. I saw a character (person) in another movie and was confused. That’s when my mother said that is acting. I said, ‘That’s what I want to do.’”

Once pursuing acting, Anthony would go on to received eight Global Stars Network Awards for his acting, represented PBS at the 2013 Emmy Awards for his role as a young Frederick Douglass in the PBS Special Mini-Series “The American Experience: The Abolitionist” (https://video.pbs.org/video/2321796209) and co-starred in the DreamWorks documentary “How to Train Your Dragon: Dragons and Dinosaurs” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bekKOmfsWfc).

As a model he has appeared in national marketing campaigns that include the Finish Line Athletic national print campaign, Villa Retail’s national print campaign (2015), Toys-R-Us’ national print campaign (2015), Charles River Apparel catalogue (2015) and the USDA Healthy Kids’ national print campaign (2011). In addition, he is a motivational speaker who has appeared as a guest speaker for the Junior Academy (2017), the “Joel Gamble Foundation’s Career Scholars Program” for NFL player Joel Gamble (Cleveland Browns, Tennessee Titans) (2016), for the Root Branch Academy’s Youth Film Festival (2015), the “Uplifting Minds II” entertainment conference (2018), and the Black Writers Guild of Maryland’s “Youth Program” (2018).

Closing the interview Lou Fields asked Anthony what advice he would give to parents who have kids that have creative abilities and he said, “Well, if you have kids who-like have big dreams, that wants to do stuff and are not doing it, just push them to do it. Every one can dream but not everyone has the courage to do it. If it’s not a big dream just help them along with their dream. Support them and encourage them and help guide them along.”
