*Racists do what racists do, but Aamito Lagum is one who doesn’t yield to the haters.
Such was the case when racists took to social media to blast an Instagram picture of the Ugandan fashion model that was taken backstage in between her appearances on the runway earlier this month during New York Fashion Week. The photo-in-question featured the former “Africa’s Next Top Model” winner while promoting MAC Cosmetics‘ lipstick line.
Although comments like “fish lips” populated the offensive responses, Cosmopolitan noted the presence of positive remarks that countered the hate as many folks stood by Lagum, saying her lips represented a heart turned sideways.
Her supporters may have started the opposition towards the racists, but Lagum herself issued the most effective shot when she reposted an article on the backlash from Black Girl Long Hair the next day on her own personal Instagram, along with the following commentary:
“My lips giving you sleepless nights.”
Soon after MAC followed with another Instagram post that reinforced the motivation behind its brand, saying it “stands for and respects” diversity, and that MAC “[celebrates] the beauty of individuality” and “the confidence to be who you are.”
