‘Star Trek’ Pioneer Nichelle Nichols Diagnosed With Dementia (Report)

*Nichelle Nichols, the actress and singer who broke racial barriers as communications officer Lieutenant Uhura on “Star Trek,” has been diagnosed with dementia and the disease has progressed, reports TMZ.

According to docs filed in Nichelle’s conservatorship, For the last two to three years, Nichols has been a patient of Dr. Meena Makhijani, who specializes in osteopathic medicine.

Makhijani says Nichols has “moderate progressive dementia,” and gives details of the severity of the disease by rating various cognitive functions, notes TMZ. She says Nichols has major impairment of her short-term memory and moderate impairment of understanding abstract concepts, sense of time, place and immediate recall.

However, the doctor also said there is no apparent impairment for things like long-term memory, orientation of her body, comprehension, verbal communication, concentration, recognition of familiar people, or her ability to reason logically and plan actions.

TMZ previously reported that Nichols’ son recently had four fiduciaries assigned to her as conservators to prevent her from being taken advantage of by people close to her.
