The Edgy Sundance Favorite ‘Blindspotting’ Comes to Theaters in July

*Riveting, groundbreaking and edgy are all words that can correctly describe the independent film “Blindspotting.” Mostly everyone in the theater were on the edge of their seats at multiple points during the film. Encapsulating for sure, as it touched on some very necessary and relevant topics that most can relate to today.

EURweb’s Nicole Collins was able to attend a special screening of the Sundance favorite before sitting down with the film’s creators and stars, Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal.

When I first read the synopsis of the film I thought “wow, another movie about race and police”. Not to say the subject is played out but, lately, I hadn’t seen a moving art depiction of that subject that was fresh. Blindspotting is it. The film, created by best friends Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal, explores the dynamics between two best friends, a white and black man, in one Oakland’s hoods and the challenges they face as gentrification makes over their neighborhood.

The storyline and writing are for sure what separates this film from others but we can’t ignore the many stylistic choices that were taken. The choices were bold and unapologetic. It seems that in the new phase of content creation, creators are doing just what they want to do and boldly so. This is necessary for a poignant film. A film whose pre life span took 12 years has got to be well tuned. The creators both agree the getting the characters and events specific to Oakland was key to the film’s success.

The subject matter is an interesting one. Yes, the subject of police brutality and negligent killing of black and brown people are covered but it’s deeper than the obvious. Are races looked at as equals even when considering the same socioeconomic background? What role does gentrification play in the way people of color are portrayed? What does it take, if anything, for people to wake up and understand that some of these behaviors are monstrous? Can people be truly forgiven for past transgressions? What story are we writing and/ or erasing with our actions? And more.

“Blindpsotting” hits theaters in July 20, 2018. Get more info HERE.
