Weekend Watch: ‘Skyscraper’ and ‘Hotel Transylvania 3’ All About the Highs

Skyscraper” and “Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation” are all about the highs—a high-rise and hijinks on the high seas. The first TV series about Superman began with the narrator describing a “powerful” being “able to leap tall buildings in a single bound.” Then onlookers say, “Look! Up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane!” And finally someone says, “It’s Superman!”

Well, in “Skyscraper,” it’s a crane that bird like superhero Will Sawyer (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) leaps from—with a prosthetic leg no less—to a building engulfed in flames. When it comes to the Rock’s fans, they believe Johnson is like Teflon and his exploits are credible. My dentist told me even though she wishes he would have a black love interest for a change, she would go see him in anything. “I just like to look at him,” she said with lust in her eyes.

There is a reason Sawyer is risking life and limb to enter the city’s tallest skyscraper known as The Pearl. His wife and twins are in the edifice. They are the only inhabitants because Sawyer, a security consultant, is in Hong Kong on assignment to assess building’s security. Chinese billionaire, Zhao (Chin Han), extended the invitation to Sawyer and his family to be the first to enjoy The Pearl’s luxurious accommodations.

When Zhao’s foes attempt to destroy the skyscraper, it is no easy task considering Sawyer, a former Vet and FBI agent, retains the skills. Directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, Neve Campbell, Roland Møller, Noah Taylor, Byron Mann, and Pablo Schreiber also star.

‘Hotel Transylvania 3’

The gang’s all here with Drac in ‘Transylvania 3.’

“Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation” is all about the hijinks, family fun, and the love Jones the Count (Adam Sandler) develops for the Ship Director (Kathryn Hahn). Needless to say, the whole family will get a kick out of watching this dysfunctional family take to the seas and the dramas that unfold.

Drac’s daughter Mavis (Selena Gomez) surprises Dracula with a family voyage on a luxury Monster Cruise Ship so he can take a vacation from providing everyone else’s vacation at the hotel. The rest of Drac’s Pack cannot resist going along. But once they leave port, romance is in the air when Dracula meets the mysterious Ship Captain, Erika, whose background you will be surprised to learn. Mavis is now the overprotective parent, keeping her dad and Ericka apart.

What really stands out about this animated fun ride is the message that it’s ok if everyone doesn’t look the same. Directed by Genndy Tartakovsky, “Transylvania 3” also stars Kevin James, Fran Drescher, Steve Buscemi, Molly Shannon, David Spade, Keegan-Michael Key, and Jim Gaffigan.   Twitter: @thefilmstrip
