West Coast Rap Icon Warren G Talks New YouTube Premium #GfunkDoc

*West Coast rap icon Warren G, born Warren Griffin III, has teamed up with YouTube Premium for his new documentary, “G-Funk: The Untold Story of Warren G” (#GfunkDoc). The film traces the early beginnings of Warren G, Snoop Dogg and Nate Dogg’s group 213 in the early 90’s, while chronicling the rise of “Gangster Funk.”

Featuring never-before-seen footage and interviews with Warren G, Snoop Dogg, Chuck D, Ice Cube, Ice T, Too Short, The D.O.C., Wiz Khalifa and others, G-Funk provides a first-hand look at Warren G’s story and G-Funk’s impact on pop culture.

Warren sat down with EURweb’s Jill Munroe to discuss his introduction into “G- Funk” music from early west coast rap pioneers “Above The Law,” his culture impact on current artists like Kendrick Lamar and Ty $, the impact of streaming on today’s hip-hop, how his debut album saved Def Jam in the 90’s and what motivated him to drop a documentary.

On the topic of the longevity of the G-Funk signature sound, Warren G had this to say:

“I really wanted people to experience the world of West Coast hip-hop seen through my eyes, and also how it helped inspire and evolve the current music of today,” Warren G says. “We all knew we were creating something dope but didn’t realize it would have such a lasting effect on music indefinitely.”

Warren G’s 1994 debut solo album, Regulate… G Funk Era, was certified triple platinum. The album went 1X platinum in three days. The classic title track, “Regulate” featuring Nate Dogg samples the Michael McDonald song, “Keep Forgetting” and was certified double platinum. It was originally featured on the Death Row soundtrack of the Tupac film, Above the Rim.

G-Funk marks the first feature film from 24-year-old director Karam Gill and is dropping on YouTube Premium, July 11.
