Trump’s Second SCOTUS Pick Disarms Democrats

*Majority Leader Mitch McConnell praised President Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, conservative Judge Brett Kavanaugh in the kick off of the confirmation process this morning. The Washington native was revealed as the top choice out of four candidates in the prime time announcement last night.

President Trump said his pick had the best credentials to replace soon-to-be-retired Justice Anthony Kennedy, for whom he worked as a clerk. This morning Kavanaugh met with GOP leaders. In remarks after the meeting, VP Pence said he looks forward to working with McConnell to advance the Senate’s proper role and called the SCOTUS selectee “a good man.”

However, Democrats opposing the nomination started their campaign to block Kavanaugh immediately after the announcement to show him in an unappealing light. Senators Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Corey Booker (D-NJ), Tamala Harris (D-CA), and Bernie Sanders took to the media and held rallies to denounce Kavanaugh, citing his position on Roe V. Wade and healthcare and views on a president’s executive authority are a threat.

“Judge Kavanaugh is way at the extreme. He believes a president shouldn’t have to be investigated…with the Mueller investigation, we shouldn’t put him on the bench,” Schumer said at the Capitol Tuesday morning.

The director of the Action Center for Race and Economy, Executive Director Maurice BP-Weeks , warns that the judge is a threat to Civil Rights.

“Tonight ’s announcement threatens to destroy decades of progress made by our nation’s most vulnerable communities, and it locks in a white supremacist agenda from Capitol to the White House to the halls of our nation’s highest courts,” he said in a statement Monday evening.

“People of color, women and so many other folks pushed to the margins of America have already lost so much under this administration’s racist, misogynist, anti-immigrant, corporations-first policies. Things will only get worse with Judge Brett Kavanaugh as Trump’s nominee,” BP-Weeks surmised.

Mr. Kavanaugh is a native of Washington, DC and worked for both Presidents George W. and George H. Bush. Speaking for himself, giving a preview of how he might make decisions, Kavanaugh said his judicial philosophy is, “A judge must be independent. A judge must interpret the law, not make the law. A judge must interpret the Constitution as written.”

The confirmation will be completed by October, ahead of mid-term elections.
