*OK, inquiring minds want to know. Just what is going on between Janelle Monáe and Tessa Thompson? At first Monáe and Thompson seem to just be friends on a social level. But then they were seen more and more out and about … but appearing to be more than just “friends.”
Then Monáe revealed this info to Rolling Stone:
“Being a queer black woman in America, someone who has been in relationships with both men and women – I consider myself to be a free-ass motherf–ker.”
With that revelation of being a “queer Black woman” or “pansexual,” as she was referred to, as well as the release of her album Dirty Computer (and accompanying film that starred Thompson as a romantic interest), people thought at that point she would be more open about her relationship with Thompson. However, that hasn’t been the case. Monáe is still not talking.

Meanwhile, Thompson spoke on the situation in a new interview with Net-a-Porter’s PorterEdit, She offered some insight into their relationship, while admitting that doing so is complicated for the both of them.
“It’s tricky, because Janelle and I are just really private people and we’re both trying to navigate how you reconcile wanting to have that privacy and space, and also wanting to use your platform and influence,” she said. “I can take things for granted because of my family – it’s so free and you can be anything that you want to be. I’m attracted to men and also to women. If I bring a woman home, [or] a man, we don’t even have to have the discussion.”

Thompson says it’s “tricky” to balance wanting to keep her privacy as well as wanting to use her influence to speak about LGBTQ issues.
“That was something I was conscientious of in terms of this declaration around Janelle and myself. I want everyone else to have that freedom and support that I have from my loved ones,” she said. “But so many people don’t. So, do I have a responsibility to talk about that? Do I have a responsibility to say in a public space that this is my person?”
On the other hand, she claims she’s not concerned with the rampant speculation about her relationship with Monáe. Put it this way, she will admit that that they share a deep, deep bond.
“We love each other deeply,” Thompson said. “We’re so close, we vibrate on the same frequency. If people want to speculate about what we are, that’s okay. It doesn’t bother me.”
