*The BET Experience weekend which ended yesterday (06-24-18), actually kicked off last Thursday night at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel with the ASCAP Rhythm and Soul Awards.
The annual even honored honoring 90’s R&B group Xscape (styled as XSCAP3) with the “ASCAP Golden Note Award” and the Hip Hop trio, Migos with the “ASCAP Vanguard Award.”
Celebrities and friends of the R&B group came out en masse to support the group and even shared with us their favorite Xscape song.
“Oh my God!! All the music from Xscape was so amazing,” Mona Scott Young said. “You know what was so amazing when we brought the ladies together, they hit those notes without missing a beat and that’s when you know something special is happening.” But, I love all Xscape’s music, I love everything they represent and I love the nostalgia that I feel when I listen to their music.”
R&B singer Sevyn Streeter also stopped by to talk with us on her favorite songs from Xscape.
“I love Understanding, I love Just Kicking it, I mean I love their whole catalog… they have a catalog… that’s the thing, it’s about catalog.
When asked if she was surprised to see the group back together performing on stage after all of their differences she said, “I mean the way that I feel music always has to complete itself,” Streeter said, It doesn’t matter if it started 20 years from now 40 years from now it just always have to continue to evolve and we evolve as artist…and it always comes back around, it always comes back full circle so I’m not surprised, they’re talented.
Gospel singer and composer JJ Hairston was also in attendance to accept an award as well as one of the performers for the night.
The ASCAP Rhythm and Soul Awards is held annually to recognize songwriters and publishers behind the biggest R&B/Hip Hop,rap and gospel songs of last year.
