Carmelo Anthony: If You Were Him, You Wouldn’t Opt Out of $27.9M, Either – So Shut Up!

carmelo anthony (OKC)

*Don’t front. If you were Carmelo Anthony, you’d do the SAME thing. Yes, you’d take the $27.9 million you are contractually OWED … even though as a player you’re not even remotely worth it because your court skills are not what they used to be.

Yes, he could “do the right thing” and opt out of his contract, but he realistically knows that if he did, the open market would not pay him nowhere near that much. So, like we said, he’s going to do what anybody with a brain would do and that’s take the money … which means staying with the Oklahoma Thunder and making the organization and its fans very unhappy.

Here’s what Mark Stein of the New Times reported on Anthony’s decision this past Friday:

“Carmelo Anthony does not intend to opt out of his current contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder, according to a person familiar with Anthony’s decision.

” Anthony has until Saturday at midnight (Eastern) to exercise the option that would make him a free agent July 1 — provided he were willing to walk away from the $27.9 million he is owed next season. But he is planning to let the deadline pass quietly and keep his current contract in effect, according to the person, who was not authorized to discuss the situation publicly.”

Oops. It appears the Thunder has a problem.

They realize they are bound to a player who is – plain and simple – not worth the king’s ransom he’s due to be paid. Check this out. In the recent NBA playoffs, Anthony played 194 minutes with the Thunder and had two assists. Yes, you read that right. Two assists! Last regular season, 32.5 percent of Anthony’s offense came from isolations or post ups, and he scored less than 0.9 points per possessions on those — his numbers aren’t awful, but they’re not good enough to make up for his poor defense, according to NBC Sports.

His bad numbers in the regular season is why his post season minutes shrank. However, in the wake of the Thunder being eliminated after the first round, he says he does not want to accept that role and fewer touches next season. He said he wants to get back to playing his way. (que the laugh track.) Yes, OKC, you’ve got a problem. Good luck looking for sympathy around the league.

Meanwhile, instead of taking the OKC fans’ criticisms lying down, Anthony decided to respond with a photo on Instagram telling them to evaluate what’s important in life.

“Oh, you mad, huh? Take a step back, evaluate what is important and enjoy life,” is what Anthony captioned a photo that he posted on Instagram.

Yeah, he may sound flippant, but he has a point. He’s telling fans not to get mad about something that has no impact on them. He wants them to think about the things that are important to them and then try to enjoy those things.

Yep, they might as well take his advice ’cause they have no choice. So, shut up!
