*”Superfly” is a remake of the 1972 blaxploitation classic starring Trevor Jackson as Priest, a drug dealer planning one last score before going straight. The remake updates the story, bringing it firmly into the 21st century Atlanta strip club culture with a soundtrack to match produced by chart-topping hit maker Future.
Priest’s 2018 reimagined universe was created by Director X- the legendary music video director (Drake, Rihanna, Ciara, Nikki Minaj) – and a screenplay by Alex Tse. The film also stars Jason Mitchell (Straight Outta Compton, The Chi,) Michael K. Williams (The Wire, Boardwalk Empire,) and Lex Davis Scott as Georgia.
EURweb’s Jill Munroe sat down with the cast and director to talk about updating a classic, working together and the film’s steamy sex scenes. Jackson said he wasn’t nervous about the complexities of one scene in particular that takes place in the shower as he’s had “lots of practice.”
Both Director X and Lex Scott Davis who appears as “Georgia” in the film discussed how the updated version of “Superfly” features a more empowered women for the 21st century. Scott Davis said, “I’m so happy that the women were written with high regard and on an equal playing field with the men”
Director X said, “the women had to reflect the women of the 21st century. So much has changed since the 70’s, a docile woman wouldn’t work. They had to be strong, they had to be intelligent, they had to be equals with Priest.”
Jackson and Mitchell’s onscreen chemistry developed into a brotherhood according to the two. Jackson said that’s not the usual experience when working on a drama/action film. They hope to work together on another project in the future.
Superfly hits theaters on Wednesday June 13.
