EUR Illustrator TAYO Fatunla Wins Lifetime Achievement award – ‘A Great Honour’

*The 17th Annual East Cast Black Age of Comics convention EBACC featuring the Glyph Comics Awards (GCA) has come and gone as many were nominated in various categories of the comic industry but only one could win.

The event was a who’s who of black illustrators, writers, artists and talents together in one place at the Tech Freire Charter school’s premises in downtown Philadelphia. During the awards evening hosted by Jamar Nicholas, five pioneer artists were recognized for their contributions spanning three decades of continuous presence in the industry.

The 2018 Lifetime achievement award went to Ray Billingsley (Curtis), Barbara Brandon-Croft (Where I’m coming from), Jerry Craft (Mama’s Boyz), British-Nigerian Tayo Fatunla (OUR ROOTS) were present to pick up their award and Ralph Stevenson (Concepts in Communication, Inc.) who could not be there was also honoured in his absence as well.  Tayo Fatunla’s OUR ROOTS continues to feature on EURweb.com from time to time.

East Coast Black Age of Comics Convention ECBACC 2018
An array of young, established and aspiring artists and writers, men and women were under one roof in the Market place designated area to showcase their works and for many fans, who came from far and near to see and interact with their favourite artists and new ones as well. It was also a gathering to network. Artists and writers in attendance were Jamar Nicholas, Eric Battle Akinseye Brown, Tayo Fatunla, Sheeba Maya, Jerry Craft, Greg Anderson, Roye Okupe, actor and Cosplayer, Bill Johnson, William H. Foster, Mshindo Kuumba I to mention a few.

There were also Cosplayers which refers to people dressed up as black superheroes or characters from a video game, comic book, or movie. Actor and cosplayer Bill Johnson well known as a cosplayer was there to introduce Cosplayers in attendance and who gave an insight into how the costumes are mace and about the characters they were portraying. As the convention was going on, there were Youth activities, Comic workshop sessions for children Panels and screenings and presentations including TAYO Fatunla’s PowerPoint and talk presentation of the Mandelas, that is Nelson and Winnie Mandela in comics and cartoons.

ECBACC founder and president is the tireless Yumy Odom whose passion is to see that the Comics convention should continue to be a good forum to promote works of Black Comic artists and illustrators and that they remain current and relevant in a competitive industry.
