Rashad Robinson, Color Of Change PAC Spokesperson:
“With Stacey Abrams’ victory in today’s gubernatorial primary, we are one step closer to electing the nation’s first Black female governor. During the primary, Color Of Change PAC worked aggressively to build grassroots Black political power in Georgia and mobilize support for Abrams’ candidacy. We organized volunteer teams in Atlanta, Savannah, and Columbus. Our Black Joy Brunches provided a space for 100+ volunteers to come together to send over 87,000 peer-to-peer text messages to energize Black voters around Stacey’s progressive platform to end money bail, widen access to affordable healthcare, provide tax credits for childcare, and expand after-school programs.

We launched a targeted digital ad program and distributed a video storytelling platform to lift up the voices of our Georgia members and volunteers, reaching 200,000 voters.

But we are far from done. Color Of Change PAC will continue working with Black communities across Georgia through November’s elections to mandate a victory for Stacey”

Abrams won the Democratic primary in Georgia’s gubernatorial race Tuesday, becoming the first black woman in the nation to hold a major party’s nomination for governor.

If she wins in November, she will become the country’s first black female governor.

The former state House minority leader defeated former state Rep. Stacey Evans, who ran a campaign that tried to appeal to moderates and independent voters.

Abrams, who grew up in Gulfport, Mississippi, as one of six children, told CNN’s Kyung Lah in an interview before the election she was aware that “as an African-American woman, I will be doing something no one else has done.”

In the interview, Abrams also recounted a story about being rejected as a high school student at the gates of the Georgia Governor’s Mansion at an event honoring the state’s top students.
