*Ever since she was discovered by Jay-Z in Barbados in 2005, Rihanna has been a force to be reckoned with.  With nine Grammy Awards, more than a dozen American Music Awards, and an MTV Music Video Vanguard Award, she has earned her place as a music icon. Whether it is her stature as a fashion powerhouse, a beauty mogul or a body positive advocate, she has paved the way for many others to venture on.

Having very recently turned 30, she has seven certified platinum albums to her name. Rihanna has released 71 singles, of which 14 have made it to number one on the Billboard charts, making her the fastest and youngest solo artist to have reached that mark. Though criticized by naysayers for having a very specific voice, it has proved to be one of the most versatile voices of our generation that is unmistakable and multifaceted.

It was her who sky-rocketed Clavin Harris to fame with her single “We Found Love” back in 2011, and effectively started the trend of female vocalists pairing up with the house DJ. It was also her who opened the doors of the mainstream to Caribbean-born artists, with many like Shaggy and Sean Paul making it to the top of the charts.

A sexual, fearless, and confident woman, Rihanna has set the stage for black women to be carefree with their music choices and has pushed boundaries through her art. This sex-positive attitude has been ground-breaking and widened the horizons for other female performers and fans at large. Her penchant for proudly showing off her nipples and being indifferent to criticism for her weight gains has done a lot to inculcate body positivity in young girls.

However, one cannot talk about Rihanna and leave out her impact on the world of fashion and beauty. From being the creative director of the sportswear company Puma, where she managed to sprinkle just the right amount of stardust on its products, to the launch of her Fenty Beauty range, with her 40 shades of foundation setting a new standard for catering to all skin types, she has had made her relevance in the marketplace, and her capacity to tap into the consumer’s appetite known.

Among all this, she has managed to carve out enough time to pursue causes that she values.  Last year, she sat down with the French president Emmanuel Macron to discuss global education.  And this year, as the ambassador for the Global Partnership for Education, she helped in raising 2.3 billion dollars at the Global conference in Senegal for the education of children.
