Ringside Update/Golovkin vs Martirosyan Showdown Set

*All eyes are set for next weekend May 5 as Gennady “GGG” Golovkin is set to go against Vanes Martirosyan in an effort to defend all of his middleweight title belts now that his originally scheduled bout with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has been scuttled.

There’s probably some of you out there who may not have heard of Vanes but folks let me tell you something, this guy is a very formidable opponent who comes into this one with a ring record of 36-3-1 with a punch that could knock anyone out. And he may just pull off an upset if he sticks to his game plan, you never know.

The odds in Vegas are 13-1 against him right now but just like nobody thought that Big John Tate wouldn’t get knocked out by Mike Weaver, and nobody thought that Lamon Brewster didn’t have a chance at beating Vladimir Klitchsko (who got knocked out in the fifth round of their bout), this writer believes that Martirosyan has indeed a chance to pull it off. This one thing is for sure, the boxing world will be turned upside down if he does do it. As I always say, we’ll see what happens.

This fight is being brought to you by GGG Promotions in association with Don King Productions and will be telecast live on HBO from the STUBHUB Center in Carson, Calif.

In other boxing news,  the following weekend on May 11, young and upcoming sensation Devin Haney will be the featured main event on the Showtime network as he goes against Mason Menard in a bout that will take place in Philadelphia, Pa. This kid is the latest top talent that being mentored by Floyd Mayweather Sr., and Floyd Jr., and could well be on his way to being the greatest young talent in the sport. He’s only 19 years of age and has a ring record of 18-0 with 12 coming by way of knockout. He hails out of  Las Vegas by way of San Francisco, Calif. and has been carefully managed by his father Bill Haney who done a tremendous job with his career.

What’s really important to note however is that this upcoming bout with Mason Menard is going to be the a real litmus test for Devin as he goes against a guy who has a little bit more pro experience with an impressive ring record of 33-2 with 24 coming by way of knockout. Menard says that he plans to put a halt to Haney’s meteoric rise in the sport on May 11 in this Sho Box The New Generation episode.

This isn’t going to be easy for either one of these kids, but whoever wins will be the USBA champion in the lightweight division. We’ll see what happens.
