Black Stars Who Dropped off the Entertainment Industry Radar

kellie williams

Kellie Williams, 42

Kellie Williams was best known for her role as Laura Lee Winslow, the middle child of Carl and Harriette Winslow, in ABC’s “Family Matters” (1989-1997). The sitcom ran on CBS and was canceled after running for an additional year. After that, she began acting in the ABC television show “What About Joan?” where she starred alongside Joan Cusack for two seasons in 2001.

For nearly 8 years after that, she stayed off the spotlight until in 2009 when she was on the Style Network program Clean House for six episodes as a substitute host for Niecy Nash.

In 2009, she married Hannibal Jackson, with whom she has two children, Hannah Belle and John Ervin Jackson.

lisa nicole carson

Lisa Nicole Carson, 48

Carson has had the distinction of simultaneously being part of television’s most appreciated comedy and drama series. One of her most reputed works was as prosecutor Renee Raddick in Fox Television series “Ally McBeal” for four consecutive seasons in the mid-nineties.  At the same time, her role as Carla Reese, the mother of Eriq La Salle’s son on NBC’S ER also received a lot of acclaims.

Carson’s film career has also been quite extensive. She acted in the comedy Life (1999) with Martin Lawrence and Eddie Murphy, with Denzel Washington in Devil in a Blue Dress (1995), with Jada Pinkett Smith in Jason’s Lyric (1994), and many others.

Other than appearing in BET’s New Edition biopic in 2017, she hasn’t been active since the early 2000s and it is widely believed that this had to do with her suffering from a mental illness. There are some arrests and odd public instances attributed to her, with Rolling Stone having reported an episode of her at a restaurant where she was “sitting alone, talking to herself, and then she locked herself in the bathroom for 45 minutes.”

kadeem hardison

Kadeem Hardison, 52

Hardison is an actor and director best known for his role as Dwayne Wayne on “A Different World” (1987-1993). He also has a few sitcoms to his credit like “Living Single” and “Girlfriends”. He also played the title character’s fathers in the Disney Channel series K.C. Undercover.

His movies include names such as School Daze, Vampire in Brooklyn, Made of Honor, Renaissance Man and Biker Boyz.  However, his movie career mostly consists of roles in small-screen and straight-to-DVD films.

Hardison was previously married to Chante Moore and has a daughter, Sophia Hardison, with her. His mother, Bethann Hardison, who also managed his career, is a former model and activist for racial equality and now has her own modeling agency.

cherie johnson

 Cherie Johnson, 42

An American actress, author, columnist, executive producer, producer, and writer, Johnson’s first stint with fame was around the age of 6 when she first appeared on Punky Brewster (1984) as the fictional character Cherie. However, many of you will probably remember her better as Laura Winslow’s best friend Maxine “Max” from the television show Family Matters. With time, however,  her TV career flat-lined.

She currently writes columns for publications including Dimez Magazine and Glam Couture Magazine. Johnson has also written and self-published books that have drawn her praise and won her several awards. These books include Two Different Walks of Life, Around the World Twice, and Peaches & Cream.
