*In the wake of her kick arse and historic performance at Coachella on Saturday evening (04-14-18), which paid tribute to historically black colleges, Beyoncé says she is donating $100,000 to four black universities.
Bey announced on Monday the Homecoming Scholars Award Program for the 2018-2019 academic year through her BeyGOOD initiative. She plans to give $25,000 each to Tuskegee University, Bethune-Cookman University, Xavier University of Louisiana and Wilberforce University. One student from each school will receive the scholarship money.
According to Variety, this is the second year for a scholars program created by the singer. The report reminds that the Formation Scholars Awards Program, a merit scholarship program was established in April 2017 in celebration of the one-year anniversary of Beyonce’s 2016 album “Lemonade.” The awards encouraged and supported “young women who are bold, creative, conscious, confident and unafraid to think outside of the box.”
Meanwhile, the Homecoming Scholars Award Program for 2018-2019 will expand to all qualifying students at the four universities, regardless of gender. The disciplines will include literature, creative arts, African-American studies, science, education, business, communications, social sciences, computer science and engineering. All applicants must maintain a 3.5 GPA or above. All finalists and winners will be selected by the universities. Winners will be announced in the summer.

To say Beyoncé turned it up and out at Coachella Saturday night is an understatement. Cardi B, who? Yes, the wait was worth it. “Y’all ready Coachella?,” she asked the crowd as she opened her set, thus becoming the first black woman and any woman of color to headline the internationally famed music festival in the Southern California desert town of Indio.
“Coachella, thank you for allowing me to be the first black woman to headline,” Beyoncé said, before singing “Run the World (Girls).”
She kicked off her long-anticipated performance with “Crazy in Love” accompanied by a New Orleans-style brass marching band, and even sang the black national anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”
She sang several songs from her album “Lemonade,” backed up by the band and surrounded by step dancers.
For nearly two hours, the world’s greatest entertainer came up with surprise after surprise.
A tribute to Nina Simone and quotes from Malcolm X. She also sang “Deja Vu” with her husband, Jay-Z, and danced with her sister, Solange.
Oh yeah, Coachella attendees and folks watching the live stream around the world saw a Destiny’s Child reunion. Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams appeared on stage with Beyoncé to sing their ’90s hits “Say My Name,” “Soldier” and “Lose My Breath.”
