The World Is My Home – The Life of Paul Robeson’ by Stogie Kenyatta Honors Citadel Alum

*Stogie Kenyatta seized a moment in his own life and career to tell a bigger story, one that superseded waiting for Hollywood to usher him into the superstar status that his talents deserved.

Indeed, Stogie landed parts in over 30 tv shows and movies, but after making the rounds year after year one day he committed himself to studying and mastering the life and the essence of the late, great Paul Robeson.

The result is an NAACP Theatre Award winning one man show that is a satisfying and historically fulfilling rendition of Mr. Robeson’s great achievements as an athlete, a scholar, an entertainer and activist.

On the other hand, Stogie Kenyatta’s “The World Is My Home- Paul Robeson show “ became a living history book for those hearing of him for the first time and a pleasant flashback for those who knew of him already.

Seventeen years later, Kenyatta has traveled the U. S. and 15 countries throughout the Caribbean and Central America for over 400 performances, being hosted by heads of state; much like Mr. Robeson himself.

On April 13th and 14th  attendees at the inauguration of The Asher Theater in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina will witness the greatness of Mr. Robeson and Mr. Kenyatta in tandem.  Artistic director in residence is James Stevens and for info call (843)903-3100.

On April 17th the curtain rises for “The World Is My Home” at The Citadel in Charleston.  This show is dedicated to the life and memory of Charles Foster, an honors graduate from a Charleston H. S.  and at the age of 17 broke the color line at The Citadel.

In 1966 he became the first African American to enroll and survive the Citadel’s Corp of Cadets, graduating in 1970.  Charles died mysteriously in an unsolved arson fire at his Texas home in 1986.  He was honored posthumously 22 years later in 1992 with his 8 x 10 picture on the 3rd floor of the library.

Stogie Kenyatta’s performance will salute Charles Foster’s courage, his lonely journey, his persistence and his service to a once ungrateful nation.  May he rest in perfect peace. Additional performances in South Carolina will be Thursday April 19th at Claflin University in Orangeburg, South Carolina.
