An audience watches Marvel’s “Black Panther” in Wilmington, Del.

*According to box office analysts, the dominant run of “Black Panther” “highlights a potentially troubling trend for Hollywood in which ticket sales are increasingly concentrated among just a few ultra successful pictures.”

“Black Panther” is on track to become the third highest grossing movie ever in the U.S. and Canada. As noted by wsj.com, the Disney/Marvel pic has left a string of disappointments in its wake, like Jennifer Lawrence’s “Red Sparrow” and the adaptation of the children’s book “A Wrinkle in Time.”

Numerous sequels and reboots underperformed their predecessors, including “Pacific Rim Uprising,” “Death Wish,” “Tomb Raider,” “Paddington 2” and “Maze Runner: The Death Cure,” per the report.

The success of “Black Panther” is more impressive, considering it opened Feb. 15.

via The Wall Street Journal:

“Black Panther” is an extreme example of the trend that Hollywood has been struggling with for some years. In 2015, 2016 and 2017, the top 10 movies raked in between 32% and 35% of total box office, comScore said. Previously, that figure never exceeded 30%. So far this year, it is 58%.

With the rapidly growing high-quality television options and more original movies available to watch at home on streaming services, it is harder to draw people to movie theaters.

Not the mention that folks are more likely to be drawn when a movie becomes a cultural phenomenon, like “Black Panther” or last year’s horror sensation “It.”
