Weekend Watch: Value of Easter Egg in ‘Ready Player One’ is Staggering

What better time for “Ready Player One” to come out than just before Easter. The value of the Easter egg is staggering in “Ready Player One.” A price tag of trillions of dollars might be a worthy prize for some, but Easter egg hunters in “Ready Player One” would have the world in the palm of their hands if they found the egg and won OASIS.

In the year 2045, the real world resembles a lot of what’s going on today. The only time Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) truly feels alive is when he escapes to the OASIS, an immersive virtual universe where most of humanity spend their days. Wade lives with his aunt in Oklahoma City in the “stacks,” a poverty-stricken district constructed of trailer homes piled on top of each other.

The OASIS was created by the eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance). After Halliday’s death, his avatar revealed the existence of a series of Easter eggs, or secret digital treasures, the discovery of which would win a lucky player control of the Oasis. Wade is a “gunter”—short for “egg hunter”—determined to pursue this quest even after most of the other gamers have tired of it.

Always on the forefront of filmmaking, director Steven Spielberg astounds audiences with “Ready Player One,” his entree into cinematic virtual reality. I might add the music is slamming also.

Lena Waithe, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, T.J. Miller, Philip Zhao, Win Morisaki, Hannah John-Kamen, and Simon Pegg also star.
