New Book Details Donald Trump’s Racism at Miss Universe Pageants

*A new book about Donald Trump’s alleged Russian ties includes passages that show he practiced racial bias while running the Miss Universe Pageant.

Russian Roulette: The Inside Story of Putin’s War on America and the Election of Donald Trump, from Mother Jones writer David Corn and investigative journalist Michael Isikoff, promises to take readers deeper into the president’s relationship with Russian oligarchs and their President Vladimir Putin, than anyone has yet been.

In an excerpt released ahead of the book’s March 13 arrival, two former staffers of the 2013 Miss Universe Pageant held in Moscow said that Trump would often “veto” certain contestants if he thought there were too many darker skinned or “ethnic looking” women among the finalists:

Frequently, Trump would toss out finalists and replace them with others he preferred. “If there were too many of women of color, he would make changes,” a Miss Universe staffer later noted. Another Miss Universe staffer recalled, “He often thought a woman was too ethnic or too dark-skinned. He had a particular type of woman he thought was a winner. Others were too ethnic. He liked a type. There was Olivia Culpo, Dayanara Torres [the 1993 winner], and, no surprise, East European women.”
