*If you think a college education is out of reach because of soaring costs and other mitigating factors, especially for African Americans, then think again.

The Black College Expo is coming to Atlanta (Feb. 3, 2018) and Los Angeles (Feb. 10, 2018) to show you how you can get into college. Packed with seminars, workshops, and information on how to get scholarships and grants, the one-day event will also feature close to 100 colleges and universities. Some will even offer “On-the-Spot” scholarships and acceptances. Dr. Theresa Price, the founder of the expo, told the EUR in a recent phone interview, that the event is all about showing children of color that they can strive for a better life.

“There are ways for everybody to go to school regardless of your situation but it’s just a matter of strategically planning it,” said Dr. Price. “At the end of the day, our mission is to curtail high school dropout rates and to increase the enrollment for college degrees or certificate programs for under-served and underrepresented students.”

The Compton, California native continued, “Our students need to know what their options and opportunities are and the resources available to them so they can be successful. They have to be a part of the voting process, the decision-making process, and the policy process. It all starts with education.”

Dr. Price added that you do not have to be a straight-A student either – there is money for students with less than a 3.0 GPA.

“Sometimes you have to look beyond admissions and look at what else is available,” said Dr. Price. “Call the department (you are interested in) and see if they have money. Many private schools have more money to offer than state schools and look at schools that don’t charge out of state tuition. A lot of times it’s about the strategy.”

Relying on financial aid and loans are traditional ways that many students fund their college education, but Dr. Price told the EUR you have to be smart about these options.

“A lot of the gaps we find for students (in paying for college) is about $4,000,” she said. “If you’re a needs-based student, you will automatically get close to $6000 (with a Pell Grant) and then you will get a campus job, and that’s about $5000. So, now you have $11,000. And then you may get other (financial aid) subsidies. So, worse case, you come out owing $10/15,000. There are schools out there you can afford; it’s just that a lot of times we look at schools we can’t afford. And that’s what we try to educate students on. Open up your mind and look at everything.”

As for loans, Dr. Price said, “Even if you’re borrowing, you don’t want to be at a ridiculous amount. If you could come out owing $25,000 to no more than $30,000, then that’s not bad. We don’t want you to get a loan but if you have to then we’ll work on it.”

The Black College Expo – also in Oakland, Miami, Houston, DC/Maryland, and New York – was formed through Dr. Price’s National College Resources Foundation in 1999. While it served as a platform to educate students about black colleges, over the years the expo has opened up to mainstream institutions.

“It’s all about options,” said Dr. Price. “We have colleges that might have special programs, scholarships, and opportunities for students of color or African American students.”

In addition to college info, the Black College Expo will also have representatives from the U.S. Army & U.S. Coast Guard on hand, and a variety of corporations offering internships and other opportunities for minorities. There will also be celebrity entertainment and step shows from black sororities and fraternities. Meanwhile, Dr. Theresa Price also started the Latino College Expo, which is held in California each year. To learn more about the expo and other college information, visit thecollegeexpo.org.
