*If you missed it, earlier this morning, Tiffany Haddish and Andy Serkis announced the nominees for the 90th Academy Awards otherwise known as “The Oscars.”
Additionally, Haddish and Serkis were joined by Rosario Dawson, Michelle Rodriguez and Zoe Saldana, among other celebs to do the honors which were broadcast live LA’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.
If you’re wonder how African American filmmakers and actors fared, know that Jordan Peele is nominated for Best Director and his film “Get Out” will contend for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. Daniel Kaluuya, who was the film’s lead character, is nominated for Best Actor. If Peele wins for best director, he will be the first black director to take home the Academy Award in that category.
Denzel Washington is nominated for his leading role in “Roman Isreal, Esq.” Congrats also go out to Mary J. Blige (“Mudbound”). She will go up against Octavia Spencer in the Best Supporting Actress category (“The Shape of Water”).
Besides MJB’s nom, “Mudbound” is nominated for awards in several categories. That would be for Best Cinematography, Best Adapted Screenplay, and best Original Song for Blige’s “Mighty River.” She’ll be taking on Common & Diane Warren for their song, “Stand Up for Something” from “Marshall.”
Oh, and we can’t forget about Kobe Bryant. The former NBAer’s film “Dear Basketball,” is up for Best Animated Short.
Meanwhile, activist Najee Ali has chimed in with his thoughts on how African American actors and crafts-people fared in this year’s Oscar nominations. In a statement to EURweb, he had this to say:
“Our coalition of leaders and civil rights groups are pleased with the high number of African -American talent who have been selected for Oscar nominations this year. This is proof that our advocacy which began when director Ava DuVernay was snubbed for her brilliant work with “Selma” and continued with protests and boycotts of the Oscars in later years.
“Our calls for more diversity in voting members were heard by then Academy President Cheryl Boone Issacs and with the behind the scenes work by Reginald Hudlin and other Academy members true lasting change was made by the Academy leadership to have more diversity in voting members.
“So we salute our African-American nominees but also the black talent that included Jada Pinkett Smith Spike Lee and many others who supported our Oscar boycotts and also the black civil rights groups that include Project Islamic Hope, Dr. Earl Ofari Hutchinson CEO of The L.A. Urban Policy Roundtable, The NAACP and all the black activists who showed up for our Oscar protests which helped make today possible.” – Najee Ali, Director Project Islamic Hope
