TAYO Fatunla/London’s Knife Crime – What with 2018?

tayo - Knife Crime LONDON

*Four fatal stabbings in London on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day 2018, shows again how knife crime has become an epidemic not only in London but also around UK’s inner cities.

These attacks happens mostly amongst teenagers and need I say that statistically, amongst young black teenagers of which a large percentage are of African parentage.

At least that’s my observation. I did this cartoon last year to express the worrying state on knife crime in London but the terrorist bomb attack that happened right after Ariana Grande’s concert in Manchester overshadowed the news of another fatal stabbing around same time.

The Manchester Arena bombing was an Islamist terror attack. The passing of Sir Roger Moore, my favourite James Bond actor could not be mourned properly as well. The terrorist attack was very devastating to all. I decided to shelve publishing the cartoon till later. I was quite sure that it would be relevant for another knife crime story. Many fatal stabbings have happened since then.

My cartoon is as relevant now as it was when it was produced last year. Free London travel rides for teenagers, I still believe allow for teenagers to travel far and at times away from where they live to endanger themselves and others.

Other knife incidents are gang related. London is still one of the safest places to live but does not take way the fact that knife crime is an epidemic and a terror to communities if not handled with a sense of urgency. Then there are those who survive knife attacks and who are left with life-changing injuries.
