*”Excellence is the best deterrent to racism and sexism” ... A quote by Oprah Winfrey which sums up how Britain’s greatest Formula One (F1) Race Car Driver and 2017 Mercedes World champion, Lewis Hamilton.

Hamilton, 32, has used his driving skills on the Formula One race circuits to win four World Championships and to have been in the pole position more times than any other Race Car Driver.

What began with Hamilton using a radio-controlled car propelled him into superstardom on the race circuits.

A “Born racer ” Hamilton was determined to win races. He made bad cars win races many times racing from the  end of the circuit grid and getting himself into points zone by skilfully overtaking many of his competitors. As he started racing with McLaren, I watched his career flourish the moment he was on the podium in the third position to becoming a very successful race driver.

Like many, Hamilton got me interested in the sport and has inspired many to want to race. One after the other, many of his rivals and at times his team mates, have struggled to catch up with him and would lag behind poorly in the championships. It was even too much for one of his team mates that he even retired from the race altogether after winning the world championship last year. A few of his rivals have also retired from the competition.

I watched and listened with keen interest as Hamilton was interviewed by CNN. He gave  insight as to how he had to fight bullying at school by taking up karate lessons. He fought racism while growing up and in the competition cumulating in winnings after winnings.  He would speak out publicly when he felt his car that had been doing very well was being “sabotaged” for his rivals to win. His dad Anthony Hamilton was very supportive of his son from the start (many dads out there should take note) and he has been instrumental to his son’s successes today. He did three jobs to support his son.

Most of all Lewis Hamilton came from a family that brought him up well. Britain can now boast of more great Black British sports men and women, successful in their respective sport such as Sir Mo Farah and Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill, (Athletics), World champion Anthony Joshua and Olympian, Nicola Adams (Boxing) and Lewis Hamilton (Formula One).
