*We’ve witnessed the rise of this fascinating man for more years than any of us can probably recall. Affectionately known as “Hef” the late Hugh Hefner, founder of the Playboy empire (publication, jazz festival et al.), succumbed to natural causes at the age of 91 on Wednesday, September 27, 2017.

But most of us who never got a chance to meet and really get to know Hef remained curious about the man behind the legend.

To that end we’ve dug up 12 interesting facts about the late Hugh Hefner, whose time on this earth was truly one to remember, with a legacy (not to mention a sizable estate!) we can never, ever forget.

His IQ was a sky-high 152, but he never excelled as a student

He took out a loan for $600 and borrowed $8,000 from his mom to start Playboy.

He quit his job writing for Esquire when they denied him a $5 raise.

The first issue of Playboy was released December 1953. He didn’t put a date on the premiere issue because he wasn’t sure there would be a second.

In 1992, he purchased the plot next to Marilyn Monroe’s grave in Westwood Village Memorial Park cemetery for $75,000.

Hef may have morphed into the quintessential playboy, but yo’ boy didn’t lose his virginity until he was 22 years old.
