Seth Meyers Experiences his Writer’s Very Black ‘Safe Space’ Backstage (Watch)

*On “Late Night with Seth Meyers” Tuesday, black writer Amber Ruffin was due to appear on camera and discuss the stress of Charlottesville, but instead ended up taking Meyers to her “safe space” backstage.

Filled with photos of such inspiring black women as Michelle Obama, Maya Angelou, Simone Biles, Ava DuVernay and Madame C.J. Walker, the room, Ruffin tells Meyers, was created to calm herself down amid various racial frustrations, particularly in the wake of white nationalist violence in Charlottesville.

There is also a bit of magic in the safe space, as Seth is physically unable to touch Amber’s hair or utter the words “Donald Trump” inside the room.

Ruffin joined “Late Night” in 2014, becoming the first African American woman writer in late night talk show history. She uses the sketch to convey what it’s like to be a black woman in America.
