On ‘News One Now’ Asks if the Senate will Pass GOP Healthcare Bill? – A ‘Misinformed’ Trump Threatens to De-Fund HBCU’s

*WASHINGTON, D.C.  — This morning (05-08-17) on “News One Now,” host and managing editor Roland Martin discussed President Trump’s questioning of a federal funding program that helps historically black colleges and universities.

He also spoke with CEO of Community Health TV Dr. Cory Hebert about the potential impact of the new health care bill, which was passed by Congress last week.

The bill still has to go through the Senate, where it has been projected to fail due to its many slights against the economically disadvantaged and those with pre-existing conditions, as well as leaving the parameters of insurance coverage up to individual states to decide.

“Basically what happened is that the republicans took a trillion dollars away from people that couldn’t afford health care to begin with and gave it as a tax break.  We can’t leave this up to the states because the states have other things they may be trying to do which may not be trying to protect the least of our brethren,” said Hebert.  “This is the issue – if you get sick and you don’t have preventative care, you’re going to go to the ER anyway. And if you don’t have money, the state is going to have to see you, and by the time you get to the ER because you’re so sick, that’s going to be tertiary care and surgery and an ER bill, and somebody’s going to have to pay for that – the state’s going to have to pay for that. If they do it at the beginning and give you preventative care, we prevent all that stuff.  You’re going to have pay me either way, and if you pay me earlier you won’t have to pay as much.”

Martin also spoke with Lezli Baskerville, President & CEO of the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education about President Trump’s questioning of a federal funding program that helps historically black colleges and universities finance construction projects, claiming that it might be unconstitutional.  A signing statement release by the White House on Friday about a recently approved federal funding measure contained language that made HBCU administrators worry that this program would be eliminated. Yesterday, Trump claimed he was misinformed and attempted to clarify that the statement, saying it in did not affect his support of HBCUs.

“It would be the worst time for him to do it. As he’s talking about putting $1 trillion in infrastructure, he cannot achieve his goal of building strong infrastructures in urban areas of high distress and rural areas of high distress unless HBCUs are involved. HBCUs are in the belly of the beast,” says Baskerville. They’re mostly in urban areas of high distress and rural areas of high distress. They’re graduating 40% of African Americans in the science, engineering, and technology [fields] – engineers that have to do this. His statement suggests the urgency of his establishing right now the president’s board of advisors on HBCUs, where he puts there some people who understand that.
