Bernice King: ‘If Only Daddy Would’ve Known the Power of Pepsi’

*As Pepsi continues to feel the wrath of trivializing the Black Lives Matter movement in their latest ad, the daughter of Dr. Martin Luther King has weighed in with a tweet full of carbonated shade.

The Pepsi ad borrowed imagery from protests against the killing of unarmed black people by police. Kendall Jenner portrayed a model that leaves her photo session to join protesters who just so happen to be passing by her shoot. The spot climaxes with Jenner offering a Pepsi to a white police officer standing guard…as the protesters erupt in cheers.

Many called the ad tone-deaf. Folks on social media accused Pepsi of appropriating imagery from serious protests to sell its product, while minimizing the danger protesters encounter and the frustration they feel.

Bernice King, the daughter of Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, mocked the ad by tweeting: “If only Daddy would have known about the power of Pepsi.”

Pepsi apologized for the ad just hours before they decided to pull it from YouTube on Wednesday.

“Pepsi was trying to project a global message of unity, peace and understanding. Clearly, we missed the mark and apologize,” the company said in a statement on Wednesday. “We did not intend to make light of any serious issue. We are pulling the content and halting any further rollout.”
