*Showtime is set to premiere the documentary “Burn Motherf*cker Burn!,” an examination of the violent clash between the LAPD and Los Angeles residents on Friday, April 21, 1992.

Produced and directed by Sacha Jenkins, the 90-minute documentary explores the complicated relationship between the LAPD and the city’s minority communities. “Burn Motherf*cker, Burn!” traces a through line from the 1962 ransacking of a Los Angeles Nation of Islam mosque (which left many injured and one man dead) to the 1965 Watts riots. Then on to the rise of L.A. street gangs in the 1970s and 80s, and the police-involved beating of Rodney King in 1991. This leads to the following year when four LAPD officers are acquitted by a Simi Valley jury on charges of assault — igniting the riots that lasted for days.

In total, 55 people were killed during the riots, more than 2,000 people were injured, and more than 11,000 were arrested. LAPD chief of police Daryl Gates took much of the institutional blame.

“Burn Motherf*cker, Burn!” features interviews from a diverse group of L.A. residents including: Danny Bakewell Sr., Rep. Karen Bass, LAPD Chief Charlie Beck, Jeff Chang, Perry Farrell, Everlast, B-Real, Cle “Bone” Sloan, KAM, YoYo, Dee Barnes, Norwood Fisher, Dee Dee McNeil, Aqeela Sherrills, Mike Davis, Connie Rice and Norma Mtume.
