‘Underground’: Season 2 Cast Talks Heroic Figures and Moonlight Best Picture Win/EUR Exclusive

*Powerful, engaging and relevant are just a few words I would use to describe the season 2 red carpet premiere of “Underground” and even that wouldn’t do this show justice.

In season 2 we see a lot of new faces played by Rob Riley, Jasika Nicole, Michelle Elaine and Aisha Hinds who stars as the courageous Harriett Tubman.

EURweb correspondent Kiki Ayers hit the red carpet premiere in Westwood on Tuesday February 28 to find out what the cast members thought of Moonlight winning “Best Picture,” at the Oscar’s and who their favorite black heroic figures were. Jurnee Smollett-Bell who leads the cast in “Underground,” credited her mother as her favorite heroic figure.

“She raised 6 kids and she is just the strongest woman you’ll ever meet. She is the definition of Black Girl Magic okay,” she laughed.

Riley who was largely influenced by people from Muhammed Ali to Denzel Washington, told us that he hopes someone will name him as strong figure one day.

“I’m just happy that I have so many names to call right now and I’m doing the best that I can so that somebody calls my name 20, 30 years now from now.”

Nicole, who plays a strong character in season 2, was so excited about “Moonlight,” winning an Oscar that she didn’t even wait for us to ask her the question.

“I loved it. I don’t even watch award shows a lot because I usually feel so disappointed because the shows that I think are telling you stories and have diverse casts and amazing narratives, don’t get awarded in the same way.”

Alano Miller who plays Cato also didn’t hold back his excitement for the “Moonlight win. “I’m just very very very very very excited for them,” said Miller. He also acknowledged La La Land and paid respect to that cast.

“I got to give it up to ‘La La Land’ because John Legend and Mike Jackson are EP’s of it and for them to be a part of something that is as important as that film is, as a people we should be standing up and cheering.”

The “Underground” season 2 premiere had an ultimate ending that we’re sure will keep the web buzzing. The screening was followed by an after party at Baltaire where Angela Bassett and Cube Gooding Jr. attended to support.

Season 2 of “Underground” premieres Wednesday, March 8 on WGN America.
