Cress Williams to Play Lead in CW Pilot ‘Black Lightning’

*Cress Williams will return to the CW for its anticipated new superhero pilot “Black Lightning,” written by “Being Mary Jane” duo Salim and Mara Brock Akil and based on the DC character created by Tony Isabella with Trevor Von Eeden.

Williams, who starred on all four seasons of CW’s “Hart of Dixie,” will play the title role of Jefferson Pierce, a teacher who hung up his suit and secret identity years ago. But with a daughter hell-bent on justice and a star student being recruited by a local gang, he will be pulled back into the fight as the wanted vigilante and DC legend — Black Lightning.

Salim Akil will also direct the pilot, which hails from executive producer Greg Berlanti.

Akil and Brock Akil executive produce with Berlanti Prods.’ Berlanti and Sarah Schechter for Berlanti Productions and Akil Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.
