*Airfordable is a new company that is making the high cost of travel more affordable for customers by offering layaway. Ghana native Ama Marfo, CEO and co-founder of Airfordable, says she came up with the idea while attending Drexel University in Philadelphia.

“I wanted to see my family in Ghana during school breaks, but couldn’t afford the $2,000 ticket,” she said.

Marfo teamed with cofounder and COO Craig Henry after he contacted her while researching a similar idea. Rolling Out notes that the third cofounder, Emmanuel Buah, the company’s chief technical officer, came aboard within months. All three now live in Chicago, and so far, about 10,000 customers have used the service to buy tickets. The company said customers can use the service for any airline.

Airfordable works with trips that cost at least $200. How it works is simple: users find the desired flight (or flights), screenshot the information and upload it to Airfordable’s website. Customers then make a nonrefundable deposit, followed by bi-weekly payments. The company books the flight on behalf of the customer. The user, who can add a frequent flier number, receives an e-ticket after the final payment.

“You can lock it in early, and budget effectively,” Marfo said. The company plans to expand to hotel and vacation package payment plans.

The company doesn’t check your credit score, so customers with poor or no credit could potentially be approved for a layaway plan.

There are other companies that offer a similar service, such as Chicago’s four-year-old Options Away and San Francisco-based Flyr’s FareKeep. Airfordable differs in the length of time it allows for ticket payment and installments.
